Emergency Nurse Practitioner, Altnagelvin Hospital, WHSCT
Job Role
I am an Emergency Nurse Practitioner in Altnagelvin Emergency Department and have been in post since 2011.
Career Milestones.
I began my Emergency Nursing career in London in 1996 where I worked as a Staff Nurse initially before progressing to become a Sister and then an Emergency Nurse Practitioner. During my four and a half years in London I undertook the ENB 199 Accident and Emergency Nursing and Emergency Nurse Practitioner training.
I moved to work as an Emergency Nurse in Dublin in 2000 gaining invaluable clinical experience following this. I then left nursing and worked in Pharmaceutical Research for two years. Although I enjoyed this work I missed nursing and caring for patients.
In 2003 I took up a post as a Medical / Surgical Nurse Practitioner in Altnagelvin Hospital and worked within that role for seven years. During this time I successfully completed further modules of the Specialist Practice course and Independent and Supplementary Prescribing programme in Jordanstown University.
Following this further study I realised I really missed Emergency Nursing and in 2010 I became an ENP in the Emergency Department in Altnagelvin Hospital. I enjoy the challenges that come with Emergency Nursing.
Enjoyable aspects of this job?
I enjoyed the variety and unpredictability of Emergency nursing: no two days are the same
As an ENP I enjoy how the role supports the delivery of holistic care that enhances the delivery of person centred care for patients; from they arrive in the Emergency Department to the end of their episode of care. I also enjoy being a sign of mentor for Specialist Practice students.
Throughout my career I feel the study I undertook assisted in preparing me for the role of an Emergency Nurse Practitioner.
