Registered Midwife – Band 6

Job/Role Summary

I currently provide high quality care to low and high risk mothers and babies on delivery suite. I care for labouring women, care for women having elective caesarian section and look after women in the induction bay. I provide holistic care by suturing, cannulating, looking after women in the water and include the multidisciplinary team.

Specific qualifications and experience required

Degree in Midwifery Sciences, and 6 years experience as a midwife in different clinical areas.

Completing my PGcert in nursing and midwifery education.

What attracted you to this job?

I was on my year out when I made the decision to apply for midwifery, I was looking after street girls in Bolivia whom of which most were pregnant and drug users. I knew then that midwifery was my calling. the area of drug misuse, teenage pregnancy and mental health has always attracted me.

Enjoyable aspects of the job/role

I enjoy all aspect of my job at different times, I also although it is very difficult find providing bereavement care very rewarding when you can make a very difficult situation the best experience possible for the women and families involved.

Challenging aspects of the job/role

Staffing and being the senior midwife on a shift can be challenging as you are supporting other midwives whilst providing care to your own women.

Also breaking bad news can be very challenging.

Advice for those considering the type of job/role?

I would say do it, but be sure you are doing it for the right reasons and be aware that shift work and balancing life can be difficult. I love my job so this balance I can reach.

Key skills that can be gained within this job/role?

I am very calm in emergency situations, I have gained skills in traige, quick safe decision making skills.
