Nurse Education Consultant

Job/Role Summary

I am one of a team of Nurses and Midwives who deliver ‘in service’ education to healthcare professionals, carers and recipients of services. I work in our Mental Health & Learning Disability Team- together we facilitate the delivery of education programmes of varying length and detail on many topics from medicines management to safeguarding to mental wellness and recovery.

Specific qualifications and experience required

I am Registered Nurse Learning Disabilities. I have worked in learning disabilities services for over 20 years in hospital and community settings. During this time the face of services has changed dramatically and for the better I’m pleased to say. With a shift from hospital care to care in the community or clients living in their own home there has been a need for change in approaches and strategic outlooks which is why ongoing education and continuing professional development is so important. I have a BSc (Hons) and MSc in Nursing- the dissertation of which focussed on staff attitudes to behaviour which is challenging. This is a subject I continue to have an interest in.

Career Milestones

Moving from clinical practice to education was a challenge but a very rewarding one.

Enjoyable aspects of the job/role

This job is so varied and diverse. Not only do I meet new people each and every day but I’m able to travel around to lots of new places and see/experience clinical settings across all five Health and Social Care Trusts – it really provides a good bird’s eye view of our systems, how things are done similarly and how things are done differently. We also work with the independent sector.

Advice for those considering the type of job/role?

Go for it! If you have a passion for your profession it’s a great platform to meet people and share important messages. A job well done in clinical education can really make a difference to people’s attitudes, practice and ultimately the patient experience. We get to work and co-produce now with ‘service users’ which typifies our new ways of working and is inspirational.
