Continuous Professional Development is the ongoing process for acquiring the required knowledge, skills and behaviours to maintain and enhance professional competence. This can be supported through processes such as induction, preceptorship, supervision, appraisal and individual person development plans along with self assessment and continuous personal development plans. Below are links to helpful resources.
- Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) – The NMC are the independent regulator for nurses and midwives in the UK. The NMC website will have information on The Code; Revalidation; Standards for Nurses; Standards for Midwives; Standards for post-registration; information on education, registration and how to raise concerns.
- Standards for Nursing Assistants and associated resources – A Nursing Assistant is someone who works in a nursing context, undertakes delegated aspects of nursing care and is supervised by a Registered Nurse. Nursing Assistants are an essential part of the team and provide a vital role, supporting the registered nursing and midwifery workforce to deliver high quality nursing care.
- Maternity Support Worker Standards – Maternity Support Workers are considered an integral part of the maternity care team who provide a valuable and important contribution to the delivery of high-quality midwifery care. These Maternity Support Standards will provide clarity on the role and responsibilities of the Maternity Support Worker working within the HSC Trusts and will provide assurances that they are working to an agreed standard.
- Preceptorship – NIPEC in partnership with key stakeholders have updated the NI Preceptorship Framework (2022) to reflect the NMC Principles for Preceptorship (2020) and also to align with the NI Reflective Supervision Framework (2021). This resource is relevant to employers of NMC registrants, all newly registered nurses and midwives; those returning to practice or re-joining the register; those coming to work in Northern Ireland from outside of the United Kingdom (UK) and new specialist and advanced practitioners.
- Reflective Supervision – Reflective Supervision is a participative process of supportive reflection that enables individual nurses and midwives to develop personally and professionally to improve the quality, safety and person- centeredness of their practice. Northern Ireland has a regional framework to support nurses and midwives.
- Quality Excellence Framework – The ambition of the Quality Excellence Framework is to provide assurance of the high-quality care and professional practice within and across organisations. It fosters a culture of continuous improvement and learning, ensuring that all elements of the framework are interconnected and applied holistically.
- Communities of Practice (CoP) – A CoP is a group of people who share a concern or passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly. Our NIPEC CoPs are networks of professionals that share common goals and interests. The CoPs can be sources of knowledge, learning and support.
- Ethnic Diversity Collaborative – NIPEC set up a regional collaborative to support the progression of “equal access to education and leadership opportunities for all”. Go to the NIPEC website to find out more.
- Collective Leadership Framework for Nursing and Midwifery – The aim is to increase the collective leadership capacity across the HSC system at all levels, based on the concept that acts of leadership can come from anyone in an organisation and are not restricted to people who hold designated or formal leadership roles.
