Job/Role Summary

A key responsibility of my post as Home Manager is the day to day management of all available resources to facilitate the delivery of care to the highest standard for all our residents. As Home Manager I work in partnership with the multidisciplinary team to ensure that the clients in our home receive person centred, safe, effective, high quality care. I am responsible for managing the recruitment selection, induction, training, supervision and appraisal of the nursing team. I am also responsible for ensuring care is appropriately delegated to staff, managing the duty rotas, and ensuring the care delivered adheres to standards set by the Regulation Quality Improvement Authority (RQIA). A key part of my role is audit of the service to ensure standard of care are monitored and action plans put in place were necessary to address any issues that may arise from these.

Specific qualifications and experience required

I commenced my career in Nursing in 1993 and achieved my Diploma as a Registered Nurse – Learning Disabilities in 1996.Since then I have achieved the following:

• ENB 998 Assessing & Teaching in Clinical Practice (1998)
• NVQ Work based Assessor 2005
• NVQ Level 4 in Leadership & Management
• I also have achieved a variety of Training including: Train the Trainer Medication, ATLAS Autism Training.

Career Milestones

My highlights have been progressing throughout the nurse roles from staff nurse – Senior Staff nurse – Deputy Charge Nurse – Deputy Service Manager – Service Manager – Home Manager. Although my main highlights revolve around seeing people with Learning Disabilities living full and valued lives with my input.

Enjoyable aspects of the job/role

Observing the residents -happy and engaged – in their home, living their lives to the full. Providing guidance and direction for staff to progress and develop in their roles. Motivating all staff to be as good as they can be within their individual roles.

Advice for those considering the type of job/role?

This job is both demanding and fulfilling. I would advise nurses to avail of every opportunity given to them to progress and always strive to make themselves better and do the best for the people they are caring for. Every day is an opportunity to learn.
