Clinical nursing or midwifery leaders and managers are closely involved in delivering clinical care and treatment to patients and clients. They may be heads of department leading their own professional teams, or head up multidisciplinary teams where doctors, nurses and other staff work together in a specific area such as maternity. Clinical leaders and managers are also closely involved in any changes to services for patients.
Other nursing and midwifery leaders and managers may be responsible for developing policy or commissioning health and care services. Changing demographics, increasing demands on services, advances in medicine and technology, targets, efficiency savings, managing change and rising public expectations combine to make these very responsible and challenging roles.
We want to continuously build and strengthen nursing and midwifery leaders and managers across the HSC in Northern Ireland.
Whether you are a nurse or midwife thinking about progressing further along the leadership and management career pathway, or wishing to incorporate the knowledge and skills into your existing career, the links on the right will provide information on the next steps to take.
