Behaviour Nurse (Community)

Job/Role Summary

My role is Behaviour Nurse for the Intensive Support Service. I work with both children and adults with severe learning disabilities who present with challenging behaviour. As part of my work I manage a caseload, undertake assessments, direct observations, behavioural formulations, model behaviour management, and develop and review positive behaviour support plans in a range of settings. I am liaison person for certain facilities where some of our clients reside and also have input and involvement with clients who are part of the resettlement from hospital process. My role includes providing training and education within the trust area on various topics including:

• behaviour which is challenging
• what is a learning disability
• engagement training

Specific qualifications and experience required

Initially I undertook the Health and Social Care BTec course as I had always had an interest in working within the care profession. I was a volunteer at a number of clubs and organisations. I started nursing in 1996 and qualified in 1999. The first year I was qualified I worked in a Private nursing home for people with learning disabilities. I then commenced work in Longstone Hospital. I worked here for eight years based in the male then female secure wards. During this time I completed various stand-alone modules and then made the decision to undertake and complete the Forensic Healthcare BSc as I had an interest in this field. In 2008 I moved to the community behaviour support service where I remain in post.

Career Milestones

Since starting my nursing I always enjoyed working in the community. Therefore I was delighted when I was appointed the role of Behaviour Nurse in the behaviour support service. I also enjoyed completing the forensic degree. Part of this involved travelling to travel to England and observed how the Positive Behaviour Support Frameworks are applied in practice. After observing these I was able to feed back to how our own forensic services could be shaped and developed.

Enjoyable aspects of the job/role

I really enjoy being able to work with both children and adults in this role. Due to this I also have the opportunity to work in a variety of settings, from schools, day centres, client’s homes, residential facilities etc. Therefore every day is different and often creates a new challenge! Being able to assess then implement a successful positive behaviour support programme is a very satisfying part of the job.

Advice for those considering the type of job/role?

As a Registered Nurse Learning Disabilities there are many opportunities to access and develop our knowledge and skills regarding behaviour management. I feel teams such as this are an essential and valued area of expertise. It is both a challenging but rewarding role to have.
