Job Role

I am a Clinical Educator in the Emergency Care settings in the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust, providing education training and development on site for Nursing staff working within the Emergency Department. I support both pre and post registration nursing students in their practice placement, enhancing opportunities so  they meet their learning objectives.

Career Milestones

I started my nursing career in the Ulster Hospital, before taking up a post in the Emergency Department at the Mater Hospital in 1996 working as a Dual Qualified Staff Nurse. Having undertaken a Specialist Practice Certificate in Health Visiting in 1998, I  worked for five years as a part-time Health Visitor in North and West Belfast, as well as a part-time Sister in Accident and Emergency. During this time I  enhanced my knowledge and skills and provided education and training not only for community groups but for a range of staff within both acute and community sectors.

Having had a keen interest in Learning and Development throughout my Nursing career, in 2015 I completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Education. For the past year I have been working as a Clinical Educator in Emergency Care across the South Eastern Trust .

I am a member of the Emergency Care Association (ECA).

Specialist Qualifications and experience

  • Dual qualification Registered General Nurse / Registered Sick Children’s Nurse
  • Extensive Emergency Nursing experience
  • Advanced Life support
  • Advance Trauma Nursing Course
  • Specialist Practice Certificate: Health Visiting
  • Post Graduate Certificate Education (PGCE)
  • Three and a half years in Children’s services as Safeguarding Nurse Specialist in acute care.
  • Mentorship training

Enjoyable aspects of the role/job.

Working with colleagues, delivering education and training in the clinical area, visible development of nursing staff, improving outcomes, supporting staff, contributing to enhanced outcomes or patients, keeping up to date, expanding my knowledge and the nursing staff I support.

Advice for those considering the type of job/role

Start small, complete mentorship preparation programme and support students within the workplace. This enhances teaching and facilitation skills and allows you to develop teaching plans that can not only be used for students but also for colleagues. It also keeps your own knowledge up to date and evidence based. Make use of the opportunities given for own personal development and don’t wait for someone to send you on a course, look for learning opportunities and as a professional acknowledge that there has to be much hard work, own time and effort put into getting where you want to be.
